Q&A with our Intern Kim Nicolle Mockey

Kim Nicolle Mockey is 22 years old and grew up in Stellenbosch. She studied Fashion Design and graduated in 2016 at the Design Academy of Fashion.

Tell us a bit about yourself

Kind, loving, happy and full of life are a few words that describe me perfectly. However, I am an introvert at heart and I prefer sitting alone in a corner writing, sketching or reading a book – usually one that is full of inspiring monologues – as I envision myself on a drama stage, like the time I performed a piece out of a Maya Angelou book when I was in high school. I was also the girl who was often sent out of class because of apparent ‘attitude issues’, when in fact, I was standing up against injustice and mistreatment. So, I would consider myself an activist and an advocate for my generation.

What are your career goals?

I have an extreme passion for fashion and beauty and I think the two literally go hand in hand. You cannot have one without the other. My future goal is to be Editor of an established magazine, before moving on to being a Fashion/Beauty Director. As these things indeed take time, I’m prepared to climb the ladder until I reach my end goal.

What does your internship entail at AMP?

My internship at AMP entails me working with the beauty team, which consists of Juana, Ncumisa, Helen and Aphiwe. I applied for this internship not knowing which company it was for, as the recruitment company did not state AMP’s name. I have always wanted to work for Marie Claire and COSMOPOLITAN; it was an absolute dream come true! When the email came through to tell me where my interview was going to be, I was ecstatic.

What have you learnt so far?

I have learnt how to edit articles, syndicate, find products, request pricing and organise the beauty room. I also attend meetings and work alongside Juana and the two beauty editors, brainstorming concepts and going about putting things in action. AMP as a company has impressed me since day one. We interns were treated well right from the start and everyone has been extremely welcoming. The people I work with are wonderful and I look forward to coming to work everyday.

What is the best part of the internship?

The best part of the internship is definitely the opportunity to work with major luxury brands, brands I’ve seen on television and in magazines whilst growing up, and admired for almost the whole of my existence. Just a small-town girl from the hood getting to see these brands in real life, seeing them on shoots and getting to experience the beauty of their products. Wow!

Fun questions

Who is your Dream Mentor?

The late Maya Angelou. She was an absolutely incredible woman who spoke for many generations. While Kim Kardashian is cute and Kanye is one of my favourite rappers, it’s people like Maya Angelou, Rosa Parks and Malcolm x who inspire me to be exceptional and phenomenal.

Favourite guest at dinner?

Chance the Rapper. One of my favourite rappers, whose wisdom I admire.

Do you have a pet?

Yes!!! I have two beautiful cats named Cyrus and Luscious. I got Cyrus from the SPCA in Grade Four and he’s been my absolute best friend ever since.
