  • Manage production and workflow of editorial content across all platforms, including print, web, digital applications and, when necessary, social media
  • Responsible for working with the Editor and Deputy Editor to ensure all editorial and promotional copy across all channels is correctly prepared for publication and to help ensure that deadlines are met
  • Copy edit all content for print
  • Copy edit all content for digital to ensure that all is maximised for SEO, as well as contribute to digital
  • Copy edit all content for commercial, including advertorials, proposals, social media and content marketing pieces
  • Manage print and digital budgets to meet the BSC target
  • Assist Editor with staff management and oversee all subbing freelancers
  • Create relevant, engaging digital content
  • Manage syndication rights documentation
  • Manage purchasing of syndicated pictures, usages, invoicing and sourcing of content where needed


Essential Duties & Responsibilities

1. Manage all phases of production

  • Set production and commissioning deadlines according to factory print dates
  • Ensure brainstorming, editorial and picture meetings/ briefings take place on schedule
  • Supervise copy flow and monitor adherence to deadlines
  • Monitor flow of layouts from art to subs; and the sending-to-repro process
  • Run weekly production meetings with subs and art department
  • Track work progress and gauge whether flow and speed are sufficient to make the next deadline
  • Liaise with the production manager, plus factory and repro house when required
  • Liaise with the traffic managers regarding the production of commercial content

2. Copy edit all editorial, digital and commercial copy

  • Correct factual, spelling and grammatical errors for brand content
  • Check style and tone
  • Ensure that all copy is as ‘reader-friendly’ as possible – i.e, easy to understand and a pleasure to read
  • Input (requested) changes accurately
  • Localise copy where necessary
  • Eliminate inconsistencies, contradictions and repetitions
  • Help to maintain the editorial standard of excellence
  • Check all proofs from the Repro department, marking up any inconsistencies for the art department.
  • Sign off the final dummy book

3. Ensure each page, and each digital content piece, has all the necessary elements

  • Check layouts and digital content for consistency of slugs, fonts and general design style
  • Create and manage QR codes for Ready To Shop functionality
  • Trim copy to fit layouts
  • Ensure copy is in the correct format
  • Write captions and blurbs when necessary
  • Check that all necessary bylines and credits appear
  • Insert and check page numbers
  • Insert contact details at the end of certain features
  • Check QR codes are correctly inserted
  • Help to compile the stockists list, contents page and masthead page
  • Write text for openers and focus pages and write content for digital platforms
  • Edit digital content pieces for best SEO

4. Help meet deadlines and liaise with the team

  • Ensure raw copy is subbed as early in the process as possible, to avoid delays later
  • Keep the Editor and Deputy Editor up to date on the status of all content deadlines
  • Ensure that pages and other content is signed off by all who need to approve them

5. Staff management

  • Provide liaison between production staff, including Johannesburg, and senior management
  • Provide liaison between HL editorial team and Syndication Bazaar
  • Provide liaison between HL editorial team and the commercial team
  • Communicate management decisions to all levels of permanent staff, freelance staff, Repro department and external service providers (e.g., printing)
  • Monitor timekeeping, work rate/standards
  • Give input re staff placement (and replacement) when required
  • Liaise with relevant staff to make contingency plans if and when necessary regarding temporary staff in order to keep to production schedules
  • Refer all freelance expenses that are not covered by the brand’s budget to HR and Finance departments for pre-approval
  • Stay informed about freelancer ‘going rates’ and negotiate these where necessary

6. Budgets

  • Monitor adherence to budgets and in-house rates
  • Monitor overall spending, ensuring the page-cost and issue-cost limits are adhered to
  • Consider and authorise/refuse spending on out-of-the-ordinary items
  • Create POs/order numbers as required for commissioned work
  • Process invoices to Chase system and Finance department

7. Editorial contribution

  • General editorial support (e.g. ideas for content)
  • Monitor and check client/advertiser added value (print and digital) to support sales team.
  • Create job bags (based on booklist, see below) at the start of production of each issue
  • Create, maintain and update the Black Book and wall display of each issue regularly during production of each issue
  • Send pdfs of each page processed for the above function to the Johannesburg team

8. Booklists, flat plans and digital schedule

  • Draw up and rework print booklists (in liaison with Editor, Deputy Editor and Senior Story Editor) and digital production schedule
  • Draw up and rework flat plans
  • Oversee positioning of ads in consultation with the sales staff
  • Be a ‘watchdog’ in helping to prevent ads that contradict editorial message from being placed
  • Oversee all digital schedules

9. Other

  • Liaise with our syndication partner, Syndication Bazaar, on an ongoing basis and at the end of production on each print issue, facilitate the sending all content that can be syndicated to them for upload to the Syndication Bazaar website (work with the Decor Editor and Art Editor or art interns on this)
  • Input in and assistance with planning special projects and events
  • Check and sign off on editorial staff expense claims
  • Represent the magazine at promotional and networking events where required and create social-media coverage from these when required

  • General editing experience

  • Excellent knowledge of – and a love of – the English language
  • Perfectionist and a stickler for detail and consistency
  • Have a good general knowledge and be able to handle copy on a wide variety of topics, from design and art to travel and decor
  • Proficiency in InDesign and, ideally, Photoshop
  • Experience in uploading content and images on a web-based CMS


Special Requirements

  • Minimum one year of experience as a Managing Editor and three to five years experience as a Copy Editor within the consumer magazine industry
  • A relevant tertiary qualification
  • Above-average general knowledge
  • Able to work outside of regular hours, on occasion, to meet required deadlines
