COSMO EDITOR, CATHY LUND, JOINS THE JUDGING PANEL FOR TLC NEXT GREAT PRESENTER
Johannesburg, 12 October – It’s time to reveal the judges for the next stage of TLC’s Next Great Presenter competition. The sizzling line-up of judges include: VP of Channels for Emerging Business, Discovery Networks CEEMEA, Lee Hobbs; TV and radio personality, Carol Tshabalala; Head of Content at Multichoice, Aletta Alberts; and Editor of Cosmopolitan Magazine, Cathy Lund.
“We’re extremely excited to get going with the next phase of this competition especially because we have some absolutely fantastic minds with proven track records helping us decide who Africa’s new face of TLC Entertainment will be,” says Hobbs.
The panel of judges will be attending a two-day boot camp next week with the Top 12 semi-finalists. Here, finalists will attend various mentorship sessions hosted by experts in the industry to help them prepare for the next round and avoid elimination.
Joining the panel is Cosmopolitan Magazine Editor, Cathy Lund. “I am looking for a presenter who’s charismatic, positive, emotive, articulate and polished. But most of all they need to reflect their authentic selves. Gone are the days of fake smiles, fake laughs and fake accents. I think the TLC Next Great Presenter needs to represent a continent of talented and genuine young people whose feet are firmly planted in African soil but whose sights are looking to the stars,” explains Cathy.
As the leader in driving TLC Entertainment (DStv 172) to becoming Africa’s #1 lifestyle channel, Lee Hobbs will be making sure that the Top 3 represent the brand and everything that it stands for. “I’ll be looking for someone who’s confident, vibrant, enthusiastic and engaging with a real passion for the channel. TLC is known for its diverse array of entertaining presenting talent – from Oprah and Iyanla, to Buddy and Randy – so in order to stand alongside these famous faces and become TLC’s Next Great Presenter, my advice for our 12 semi-finalists is to be yourself, be bold and most importantly be TLC!”
With a reputation of being one of the most sought after names as an MC, presenter and host, Carol Tshabalala knows first-hand what it takes to be successful in the entertainment industry. “For me, the TLC Next Great Presenter has to be someone who is unique, engaging but not forced; someone natural with an oozing zest for life,” says Carol.
Then, media content strategist and innovator, Aletta Alberts says she will be looking for someone that is well spoken, can think on their feet and someone that the camera loves. With over 27 years’ experience in the competitive South African television industry, Aletta will be looking out for a candidate who represents the future of the media and television industry.
At boot camp, the judges will have the difficult task of narrowing down the Top 12 to Top 5 after day 1. Then, at the end of day 2, the Top 5 will be narrowed down to Top 3, who will be revealed exclusively on TLC on Friday 23 October. In the end, it will be up to the viewers to choose the winner by voting for their favourite contestant from the three shortlisted finalists who make it through the boot camp stage. The winner will be announced at the Discovery Networks Upfront event taking place on 18 November 2015 and will be the host of TLC TOP 10 – a brand new series premiering on TLC Entertainment (DStv 172) on Thursday, 3 December at 20:55.
