Q&A with our Intern Kirsten Marshall
Tell us a bit about yourself
My name is Kirsten Marshall and I have been working as an HR Intern at Associated Media since 1st February 2018. When I’m not working, I enjoy spending time with family, socialising with friends, trying new foods and appreciating the beauty of the ocean.
What are your career goals?
I graduated from the University of the Western Cape in April 2017 after completing a B.Com General Degree with an Industrial Psychology major. Although university was hard work, I enjoyed studying and cannot wait to return to varsity next year when I will be undertaking my Honours Degree part time.
What have you learnt so far?
I applied for this internship because I saw it as an exciting opportunity. Since joining the company, I has been exposed to pretty much everything HR-related. I have had the best support and guidance and couldn’t have asked for a better mentor. Thus far, Training and Development has been the section I has enjoyed working on the most.
AMP has created a favourable impression on me. Its fast paced, highly energetic and ‘free-to-be-me’ atmosphere creates an environment where people can enjoy expressing themselves.
What is the best part of the internship?
In reminiscing on my best ‘intern’ moment, it would definitely be my first day at AMP. The Interns were taken to experience a live shoot which was being shot for Good Housekeeping. Beverly Nates (Fashion Director) then asked me to stay and be part of the shoot. Having never experienced anything like this before, the nervousness and anxiety I felt was indescribable. However, the Beauty and Fashion Team tried their best to make me feel as comfortable as possible and soon I was enjoying the spotlight. I then featured in the April edition of the magazine, which is a memory I will cherish forever.
In a nutshell, I can truly say that my internship at AMP has given me invaluable experience and has helped me build the foundation needed to kick-start my career.
A few fun facts about Kirsten:
- Jane Raphaely’s book is currently on my bedside table. Although I haven’t had the time to finish reading it yet, this is definitely one of my short-term goals, as I would love to get to know the woman who started it all a little better.
- A song that keeps playing in my head is Freaky Friday by Chris Brown – even though it is not my favourite song!
- My favourite song is Collide by Lady Zamar. I totally love the beat and it’s currently my feel-good song, especially when getting into that weekend mood.
